Stage 02.05 example
Here is the example we discussed in class on Monday. For each phase the operation and reason for actions are stated. Each of you should be going through this process in order to develop your zones with a clarity of purpose.
Phase I
Operation - Zone Identification, based on perceived formal relationship
Reason - Emphasize the formal relationship/vocabulary between the larger diagrammatic elements in an effort to tie them together across the implied space between.

Phase II
Operation - XZ Micro-Scarring, based on regulating lines across entire composition
Reason - Creation of implied connectivity between the large diagrammatic elements.
Result - Diagrammatic elements are imbued with additional formal characteristic in the form of surface patterning, implied connections are created across the spatial zone between, and scale is slightly broken down.

Phase III
Operation - XZ Sutures, based on regulating lines across composition, and the idea that the space between is actually a scar between elements which were once one.
Reason - Creation of physical connectivity between the large diagrammatic elements.
Result - Diagrammatic elements are tied together with suture elements creating physical connectivity across the entire zone. The smaller elements and planes between are in turn pierced and themselves scarred through application of the suture elements.

Phase IV
Operation - YZ Cuts, based on a series of regulating lines tied to a single diagram within the composition
Reason - Break down overall scale of the large diagrammatic elements.
Result - Diagrammatic elements are imbued with additional formal characteristic in the form of long cuts, scale is broken down, and implied connections are created.

Phase V
Operation - XZ Extension, length based on regulating lines and natural termination of elements
Reason - Clarify the overall direction of the large diagrammatic elements.
Result - Overall direction of diagrammatic elements and the spatial zone between is enforced, and interaction between the large element to the left and folded plane is created.

Phase VI
Operation - Plane Extension & Fold, based on offset relationship with large diagrammatic elements
Reason - Enforce the relationship between the large diagrammatic elements and adjacent yz planes.
Result - Relationship between the large element to the right and the adjacent plane is enforced. Additionally the direction and relationship between the two yz planes is enforced.

Phase VII
Operation - Selective Shift, based on existing cuts, scars, and regulating patterns in large elements
Reason - Enforce relationship between the large diagrammatic elements and space between.
Result - Scale of large diagrammatic elements is broken down, implied connections are made, and a new scale element is introduced to the diagram. The space between now acts as a flow between the large diagrammatic elements and their shifted portions, or could now be considered as multiple smaller spaces.
