Stage 03.02

Use the template file from stage 03.01 to cut out your initial study model base. Though we discussed a number of material option in class, it may serve your needs best to start with a simple 1/4"x4"x8" MDF base until we can talk individually about the materials, methods, and final characteristics. We may also decide it best to leave the final finishing of the model bases until the end of stage 03, depending on your individual preferences. It is required that you come to class on Friday with at least a temporary base with pre-drilled holes.

For those of you who want to proceed with the cutting and finishing of the initial study model base, here are the options we discussed:

Medium Density Fiberboard Base
Total base size for a final MDF base will be an 8"L x 4"W x 4"H block. The finish can be either spray paint (sanded and honed as previously displayed in the stage 02 example project) or acrylic paints (sanded and honed to a satisfactory finish to be displayed in class on Friday) Colors for either the spray or acrylic paint finish, and other further defining characteristics will be discussed individually as they relate to each study model/construct.

Plexiglass Base
Construction can either be of a single layer of 1" plexiglass, or 4 layers of 1/4" plexiglass held together by approved fasteners. The sides of the plexiglass are to be sanded smooth, with the tops and bottoms of all layers remaining transparent. Other further defining characteristics will be discussed individually as they relate to each study model/construct.

Oriented Strand Board Base
Total base size for a final OSB base will be an 8"L x 4"W x 4"H block. The finish for this will need to be an extremely thick clear coat (sanded and honed as previously displayed in the stage 02 example project). Other further defining characteristics will be discussed individually as they relate to each study model/construct.

Aluminum Plate Base
Total base size for a final aluminum plate base will be 8"L x 4"W x 4"H. Proposals on how to construct the block will be done on an individual basis. Other further defining characteristics will be discussed individually as they relate to each study model/construct.

Resin Cast Base
Total base size for a final resin base will be an 8"L x 4"W x 4"H block. Proposals on how to construct the block will be done on an individual basis. Other further defining characteristics will be discussed individually as they relate to each study model/construct. Due to the volatile nature of resin casting, you will be required to pour this material under my supervision outside of the woodshop. Resin cast bases will not be allowed indoors until they are fully cured. You must take the time restraints required for this into consideration when performing this operation.

Other Material Base
Other base materials will be taken into consideration on an individual basis, but must adhere to the size requirements previously described.
